Certification Courses

ADMISSION TO PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE COURSE(S)
The Virtual University has introduced Certificate Course(s) for professionals working in the industry as well as for the public at large. The purpose of these is to retrain professionals in new emerging areas of Science & Technology as well as provide the public with an opportunity to learn basic subjects which may be of general interest. Certificate Courses are offered in five disciplines: Computer Science, General Science, Humanities, Management and Mathematics.

DURATION:
Each Certificate Course comprised of one semester duration (18 weeks).

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Candidate can read, write and understand English language and there is no restriction on age, sex and educational qualifications. Candidate can apply for admission to maximum four (04) courses during a semester. However, students already enrolled in a Virtual University degree/diploma program are ineligible for admission towards certificate course(s).

EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL:
The University mail a package of educational material comprised of VU Info pack, Lecture handout, Lecture CD’s/DVD’s to the admitted candidate. A student is allowed to change his/her enrolled certificate course within fifteen days after the commencement of semester by providing application (signed hard copy ) to Registrar, Virtual University of Pakistan, M.A Jinnah Campus, Defence Road, Off Raiwind Road, Lahore, Pakistan or at (certificateadmissions@vu.edu.pk). Such student is required to replace the received package (if already received) by mailing Lecture Handouts & Lecture CD’s/DVD’s of the course along with payment of Rs.100/- as shipment charges to VU Bookshop (bookshop@vu.edu.pk) in order to receive new opted course material. However, overseas students are required to pay actual additional shipment charges for newly opted course.

ASSESSMENT OF STUDY PROGRESS:
The students’ study progress evaluation mechanism is based on continuous assessment throughout the semester by giving assignments, online quizzes, Graded Moderated Discussion Boards (GMDBs), mid-term and final term examinations.

AWARD OF CERIFICATE:
Each Certificate Course is of three credit hours (except Islamic Studies and Pakistan Studies). The earned course credit hours are transferable towards degree/diploma program of the University. Course Certificate would be awarded by VU Academic Department (academics@vu.edu.pk) to the candidate after successful completion of course work requirements.

Conversion of Diploma Courses towards 4-year

Conversion of Diploma Courses towards 4-year BS in Computer Science/BS in Information Technology:

Diploma holders would have the choice to complete 4-year BS in Computer Science or BS in Information Technology by additionally qualifying at least 100 credit hours with minimum period of 3-years.

COURSES OF STUDY:
Diploma in Computer Science & Information Technology program comprised of following courses meant to study within the duration of at least two semesters.


DIPLOMA IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY


DIPLOMA IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY  


The Department of Computer Science offers Diploma in Computer Science and Information Technology. This program has been designed to develop skills in information acquisition, processing, handling, retrieval and presentation. It provides balanced coverage of the various aspects of Computer Science and Information Technology and covers theory and practical experience that will allow the diploma holders to meet the challenge of today's technology. It acts as a conversion course and is intended for those who want to become computer professionals.



DURATION:


It is a one year duration program that comprises of two semesters. Each semester has 18 weeks duration.


ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:


Applicants for admission to Diploma in Computer Science & Information Technology must have passed with at least 45% marks, Intermediate (Part I and II, or equivalent examination), or I.Com or ICS or DAE or ‘A’ level examinations
or a valid Bachelor’s degree.



“The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE)
‘O’ levels and School Certificate (SC) examinations are considered equivalent to
Matriculation, and the GCE ‘A’ levels is considered equivalent to the Intermediate examination. For the GCSE (‘O’) and SC examinations, grades in 06 subjects are considered. ‘A’ level candidates must have passed 3 subjects”.
 


 



MATHEMATICS DEFICIENCY COURSE:


Candidates without knowledge of Mathematics will be considered for admission but are required to take an additional ‘Deficiency Course’ during their first semester. However, candidates already qualified Mathematics at Intermediate or Bachelor level would be exempted from Mathematics Deficiency Course.

Q. From where can I obtain the lecture CDs?
Ans. CDs are easily available through the Virtual University bookshop (http://bookshop.vu.edu.pk). Availability of CDs is not limited to VU students only; students and faculty from other universities as well as the public at large can benefit from these courses.

Q. Can Virtual University help me to learn how to operate a computer?
Ans. Definitely. You do not need to go to any computer center to learn the basics of computers. The Virtual University has developed a very exciting and comprehensive set of interactive CDs that will lead anybody through the basic learning process. No teacher is necessary and all instructions on these CDs are delivered in Urdu, thereby making them extremely easy to understand and follow for all age groups.

Q. Are the courses offered by VU comparable to international standards?
Ans. Yes. Virtual University programs are based on curricula developed by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). The course outlines used in these curricula are based on international demands and standards.

Q. Will I be able to continue my education in any other university after obtaining a degree from VU?
Ans. Definitely. In fact, VU graduates are already pursuing their MS and higher studies at top universities both within Pakistan as well as abroad.

Q. How can I get my admission form and where should I submit it?
Ans. You can get the form and all necessary information from any of the Virtual University campuses. Q. Is the Virtual University a private or Government institution?
Ans. Virtual University of Pakistan is very much a Government University. It was established by the Government of Pakistan to provide extremely affordable world class education to aspiring students all over the country.

Q. Does the University have different standards for the various provinces?
Ans. Absolutely not. The Virtual University provides an identical education to all its students regardless of their geographical location. All Virtual University students, regardless of whether they live in large cities or small towns or even remote areas are taught by the same professors, receive the same study materials. Even examinations are identical throughout the country.

Q. How is identical education possible all over the country?
Ans. The Virtual University uses free to air television for broadcasting its lectures and interaction between students and tutors happens over the Internet. Examinations are conducted in a formal proctored environment at centers allocated for the purpose by the University. The Virtual University operates its own four television channels (VTV1, VTV2, VTV3 & VTV4). Students listen to the lectures in classroom environment in virtual campuses spread all over the country. The students are provided at these campuses, free Internet facility to interact with the teachers. All lecture videos of Virtual University courses are also available for a very nominal cost.

Q. Who are the Professors at the Virtual University of Pakistan?
Ans. The Virtual University utilizes the services of the very best professors that the country has to offer. They belong to the best universities and other institutions of the country and are acknowledged masters of their subjects. Most of the professors hold PhD degrees and even several vice-chancellors of major national universities have taught courses at the Virtual University.

Q. Then VU education must be very expensive!
Ans. You will be surprised at the affordability of Virtual University programs. Despite the provision of world-class facilities and education, the cost of a BS program is only Rs. 1300 per month. The fee for the Diploma program is Rs.1,850 while MCS, MIT and MBA fees are only Rs. 2,000 per month. The fee for the MS program in Computer Science is Rs.2,500/- per credit hour.

Q. So where do I study?
Ans. If you are a full time student then you should join any one of the more than 100 campuses of the Virtual University. These are located in over 60 cities of the country and the list is available on the VU web-site (http://www.vu.edu.pk). By studying at any of these campuses you will be able to interact with your class-fellows and also avail free computer and Internet facilities which are required for student -teacher interaction. However, if you are a working professional or it is difficult for you to attend classes at a campus, then you can study from home. In this case you will need a television, and a computer with Internet connectivity.

Q. And how do I study?
Ans. You attend lectures as per the declared timetable through Virtual University's television network which operates four channels VTV1, VTV2, VTV3 and VTV4. The schedule is always available of the VU web-site. In case you miss any lecture, all Virtual University courses are also available on CDs at very nominal cost. In addition to the prescribed text books, extensive reading material is made available over the Internet through the university's Learning Management System (LMS).

Q. What if I need to ask a question?
Ans. You can ask questions at any time over the Internet using the Virtual University's comprehensive Learning Management System (http://vulms.vu.edu.pk). No other university of the country offers such a facility.

Q. How do I appear for my exams?
Ans. The Virtual University establishes examination centers throughout the country. Examinations are conducted under the supervision of the examiners who ensure the sanctity of the process.

Q. Is the VU degree recognized?

BS Dual Degree Program

AWARD OF BS DUAL DEGREE PROGRAM

A “DUAL DEGREE” is an approved course leading to the conferral of two degrees as separate awards upon a candidate who has complied with the Course Requirements of Virtual University of Pakistan for dual degree".

Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology is already offering BS in Computer Science (BS in CS), BS in Information Technology (BS in IT) and now has designed dual degree Program (BS in CS-BS in IT).

Virtual University’s dual degree program is designed to enhance students’ educational, academic and professional qualifications while minimizing the costs of their studies. Aim of Dual degree is to broaden a student’s knowledge and skills base, also to improve career options in competitive, increasingly interactive fields.

Admission Requirements/Eligibility:

Eligibility for admission to a dual degree program shall be based upon completion of course work requirement of one degree program (either BS in CS or BS in IT) with minimum CGPA 2.25 and the candidate must be a registered student of Virtual University of Pakistan.

However, no candidate shall be allowed to enroll and appear simultaneously in courses of two University i.e., BS in Computer Science, BS in Information Technology programmes leading to two separate degrees / diplomas. The enrolment of such a student in one programme will automatically be cancelled and fee paid will be forfeited.

Candidate after completion of BS course work programme (either in Computer Science or Information Technology) from Virtual University of Pakistan can apply to VU admission office on a special Dual Degree Application Form. He/she would be required to complete one of the course requirements mentioned as under:

(Explanation: candidate for dual degree program, after completion of course work requirements of BS in Computer Science can avail admission to BS in Information Technology or vice versa).

Each student shall register himself/herself for courses in the first semester carrying at least 9 credit hours prescribed for dual degree. A candidate admitted to the course shall for so long as he/she has not completed all the requirements for the degree, enroll himself/herself for each semester subject to the maximum admissible limit of three semesters and the summer session (if any) immediately following failing which his/her admission shall stand cancelled. Minimum cumulative grade point average for obtaining a degree is 2.25

2-Year Bachelors Programs

2-YEAR BACHELORS PROGRAMS

These programs have been specially designed to provide an opportunity for students to obtain a 2-Year Bachelors degree for early entry into the job market, in order to gain practical experience. They may then return and continue seamlessly into their respective 4-year programs at a later stage. After successful completion of their first four semesters, students may apply for the 2-Year degree or continue with the 4-year BS program. These programs provide an opportunity to qualify for a 2-Year Bachelors degree in the following subjects:

Duration:

It is 2-Year full time study program spread over four semesters. Each semester has 18 weeks duration for teaching and examinations.

Eligibility Requirements:

The minimum entry requirement is Intermediate or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution with at least 45% marks.

Admission application forms are same for 2-year and 4-year bachelor degree programs.

Assessment of Study Progress:

The students’ study progress evaluation mechanism is based on continuous assessment throughout the semester by giving assignments, on-line quizzes, Graded Moderated Discussion Boards (GMDBs), mid-term and final term exams. The mid-term and final term exams are conducted at VU’s designated centers and usually count for 80 to 85% of the total marks for a course.

Award of Degree:

To be eligible for the award of 2-Year Bachelors degree, the students are required to complete 60 credit hours with minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.00 out of 4.00. The students after obtaining 2-Year degree can complete their 4-Year BS degree requirements at any time by successfully completing remaining minimum 72 credit hours in at least four semesters.

Course of Study:

The courses are listed in a semester wise breakup. The courses may be revised from time to time as a result of continuous review conducted every term to bring them at par with courses being taught at top-class foreign universities. While reviewing the courses, needs of local industry and job market are also given full consideration.

All Programs

The schedule for the payment of dues will be notified at the start of each semester. The fees will be deposited in the authorized bank branches by the date announced. If the candidate, once offered admission in a degree program, enrolls himself/herself by depositing university dues and subsequently leaves the university under any circumstances, the university dues already deposited by him shall not be refunded (except security fee) in any case. Refund of tuition fee and other dues can be made to a student only if the University considers the student to be ineligible for the enrollment in a semester.

University dues for short professional courses and overseas Pakistani students will be notified from time to time. Students falling in any of these categories are requested to check on the University’s web site.

BS (Information Technology)

The Department of Computer Science offers a four-year program leading to either a BS degree in Computer Science or in Information Technology. The specialization is determined by the choice of required and elective courses taken by a student. The programs are designed to meet the growing need for computer science / IT experts in the rapidly evolving 21st century economy. Their mission is to provide graduates with a strong Computer Science / IT base that will enable them to capitalize on the increasing career opportunities in the information technology sector, to expand the limits of their knowledge by pursuing further studies, and to explore innovative approaches to computer or information technology related problems.
